Swedish Strong and Tough With a Courageous Heart

21 years of Grandma’s stories of grit and gumption describe resilience that carried her through tough times as an immigrant. Towards the end of her life we reflected on her adventures. Photo 1968, Grandma’s last Christmas with us.

My Swedish Grandma Maja was one of the strongest and toughest people I have ever met. It takes me a whole book to explain how very strong she was in proving herself as an immigrant. I built my own life celebrating the example of gritty resilience Maja demonstrated.

At the very same time, this strong and gritty Grandmother was soft and cuddly and nurturing. She was a large and imposing figure who loved spending time with me. I loved spending time with her. She became my mentor.

Maja’s valor: was stability- not strength of arms and legs, but of courage and depth of the soul that refuses to give up or give in.

What remains of Grandma Maja’s Swedish influences fills the pages of my book. This tribute to another Swedish family’s household portrays the ideals that are claimed as essentials.

These are not my ideals, but they closely convey Swedish American Household pillars I can very much identify with.

I found this marvelous Swedish family creed that inspires this blog.

Living an inspired life modeled after my Grandma Maja, who stepped up as a Swedish immigrant widow and mom of 3, facing America’s Great Depression while demonstrating uncommon grit and valor. I am determined to share her life lessons so she is no longer forgotten. I have a book to share and the reader will preview the entire story by visiting here. You are most welcome.
